Spot UV Hang Tags
Spot UV is the finish that works on a tag nobody is holding yet. Gloss applied to selected areas of a matte surface creates contrast that shifts as the tag moves — so the logo appears and disappears as a customer walks past a rail, which is exactly the moment you need attention.
At printshaQ we run spot UV on hang tags with the same setup behind our spot UV business cards. Spot UV arrives pre-selected here, so the price quoted is for a finished tag rather than a plain one plus an upgrade.
What Is Spot UV on a Hang Tag?
Spot UV is a clear gloss coating applied to chosen areas rather than the whole surface. The uncoated areas stay matte and absorb light; the coated areas reflect it. Nothing changes color and nothing is added visibly — the effect is entirely about how two surfaces behave differently under the same light.
Depending on your market you may call these swing tags, swing tickets, garment tags or product tags. The coating itself sometimes goes by gloss varnish, UV varnish or spot gloss. All describe the same thing: selective shine, deliberately placed.
Why Spot UV Hang Tags Work
- They animate. Foil and embossing look consistent from most angles. Spot UV changes as the tag turns, which draws the eye to movement.
- They keep the palette clean. If your brand is strictly one or two colors, gloss adds interest without introducing a third.
- They cost less than metal. Spot UV delivers a premium read at a lower price point than foil, which matters at higher volumes.
- They pair with photography. On a tag carrying an image, gloss over the image and matte around it makes the picture look like a window.
Spot UV vs Raised Spot UV
Both put gloss where you want it. The difference is thickness.
Standard spot UV lies flat against the board. You see it clearly but barely feel it — a change in reflectivity rather than in surface. It is the subtler option and the one that suits fine type and detailed artwork, because a thin coat holds sharp edges.
Raised spot UV is applied in a considerably thicker layer that sits proud of the board with a domed, almost wet appearance. You can feel it under a fingertip. It suits bold shapes, logos and single words, and it catches light far more aggressively. On very fine detail the extra thickness can bridge across narrow gaps, so raised works best on artwork with room to breathe.
Both are available on one side or both, and both are priced in the dropdown above.
Who Uses Spot UV Hang Tags
- Streetwear and sneaker brands. High-contrast gloss on black stock is the visual language this category already speaks.
- Tech and electronics accessories. Spot UV reads modern where embossing reads traditional.
- Beauty and haircare. Gloss on a product shot makes the packaging look wet and new.
- Sports and fitness apparel. Bold marks and raised gloss survive being seen at speed and at a distance.
- Gift and seasonal ranges. A glossed snowflake or pattern on matte board carries a season without printing a date on it.
Spot UV vs Plain Printed Hang Tags
A plain printed hang tag has one surface finish across the whole piece — every part of it reflects light the same way. That uniformity is fine, and for large runs of basics it is usually the sensible choice. See standard hang tag printing for that route.
Spot UV introduces a second surface. Because the eye is drawn to contrast rather than to brightness on its own, a glossed logo on a matte tag gets noticed even though nothing has been made bigger or louder. It is the cheapest way we know to control where somebody looks first.
Premium Upgrades on the Same Tag
Spot UV is already selected. It stacks with:
- Foil stamping — metal and gloss respond to light differently, so both stay distinct on one tag. See foil stamped hang tags.
- Embossing or debossing — gloss on the flat areas makes matte relief look deeper. See embossed hang tags.
- Die cutting — gloss following the edge of a custom shape emphasises the outline. See die cut hang tags.
- Colored edges — on 48pt stock, a painted edge alongside gloss gives three surfaces on one tag.
Stocks That Show UV
Spot UV depends on contrast, so the matte areas matter as much as the glossed ones.
- Silk matte lamination — the classic pairing, and where gloss reads most sharply
- Suede lamination — the softest, deadest surface we stock, giving maximum contrast
- 22pt black suede — gloss on black is the most dramatic version of this finish
- 16pt, 32pt and 48pt — all take UV; thicker simply feels more substantial in the hand
One thing to know: spot UV needs a coated or laminated surface to sit on. On uncoated cotton and uncoated smooth the coating soaks in and the contrast largely disappears, so we do not recommend pairing them.

Hang tag string is available as an addition to your order.
Artwork Setup for Spot UV Hang Tags
- Print-ready PDF, fonts outlined, 300 DPI, CMYK
- A separate black-and-white UV mask for each treated side — solid black where gloss goes, white everywhere else
- Both sides treated means two masks, one per side
- For raised spot UV, avoid gaps narrower than about 1mm, as the thicker coat can bridge them
- Zip the print file and all masks together before uploading
