A bookmark is the rare piece of print that gets picked up hundreds of times. It lives inside a book someone chose, comes out at every reading, and goes back in again. Almost nothing else you print gets that kind of repeat handling — which is exactly why it is worth spending on the finish.

Foil stamping is the one that survives that treatment. Real metallic foil, pressed in with heat and a metal die, stays bright after months in and out of a bag. What Are Foil Stamped Bookmarks?

Foil stamped bookmarks are printed bookmarks with metallic or pigmented foil pressed into the surface of the board. The foil sits on top of the stock rather than soaking into it, so it reflects light from every angle and does not fade or scuff the way metallic ink does.

Most often it is a title, an author name, a logo or a small ornament in gold or silver, set against a matte or uncoated background. The contrast is the point: one small area that shines while everything around it stays flat.

Why Foil Works on a Bookmark

• It earns the keep. A bookmark only works as marketing if the reader does not throw it away. Foil is the difference between a giveaway and something that stays in the book.
• It survives handling. Foil is bonded to the board under pressure. Metallic ink rubs off at the edges after a few weeks in a paperback; foil does not.
• It reads at arm’s length. On a shop counter or a signing table, foil catches the eye from further away than any printed colour.
• It matches a book’s own finishing. Publishers foil covers and spines for the same reason. A foiled bookmark looks like it came with the book rather than after it.

Matte gold on cream uncoated stock is the one most authors land on — it reads as literary rather than flashy. Give us the foil colour and its location in the special instructions when you order, and use PMS color matching if the printed areas need to hit an exact brand colour.

Foil Stamped vs Plain Printed Bookmarks

A standard printed bookmark does the job perfectly well, and for a large promotional run it is usually the right answer — see our standard bookmark printing.

The difference is what happens after the handover. A printed bookmark is judged once, in the moment it is handed over. A foiled one gets looked at again every time the reader opens the book, because the finish keeps catching light in a way flat ink cannot. If the point of the bookmark is to stay in circulation, that is what you are buying.

Sizes

Our standard is 2" x 7" — long enough to sit proud of a paperback, narrow enough not to push the pages apart. Also available:

• 2" x 6" — the classic bookmark size, the one most people picture
• 1.5" x 7" — slim, good for a minimal design or a tight budget
• 2" x 8" — taller, more room for a blurb or a series list
• 2.75" x 8.5" — oversized, closer to a rack card, for release information or a QR code

Paper Stocks

Foil needs a board that can take heat and pressure without buckling.

• 16pt — the everyday weight, right for larger promotional runs
• 32pt — noticeably substantial, and the best base if you also want painted edges
• 22pt black suede — the highest-contrast surface we stock for gold and silver

Available in silk matte lamination, suede lamination, uncoated cotton, uncoated smooth and UV high gloss.

We stop at 32pt on purpose. A 48pt bookmark is about 1.2mm thick — it splays a paperback spine and will not sit flat between pages. Thicker is not better here.

Hole Punching

A punched hole at the top takes a tassel or ribbon. It is optional and off by default, because plenty of bookmarks do not want one — and if you are adding a tassel yourself, tell us the diameter you need in the special instructions.

Artwork Setup for Foil Bookmarks

• Print-ready PDF, fonts outlined, 300 DPI, CMYK
• A separate black-and-white foil mask — solid black where foil lands, white everywhere else
• Vector foils best. Very fine serifs and hairlines can fill in under pressure
• Keep foil clear of the trim edge, and clear of the punch if you are having one
• Extend background colour to bleed; zip the print file with every mask before uploading
