Spot UV Bookmarks

Gloss against matte is the cheapest way to control where somebody looks. Coat one part of a bookmark and leave the rest uncoated, and the eye goes to the coated part — without anything being made bigger, brighter or louder.

What Is Spot UV on a Bookmark?

Spot UV is a clear gloss coating applied only to chosen areas. Nothing changes colour and nothing visible is added — the whole effect comes from two surfaces on one piece of board behaving differently under the same light. Uncoated areas absorb it; coated areas throw it back.

On a bookmark the classic use is a title or logo glossed against a matte field, or gloss over a cover image so the picture looks like a window cut into the card.

Spot UV vs Raised Spot UV

Both put gloss where you want it. Thickness is the difference.

Standard spot UV lies flat against the board. You see it clearly and barely feel it — a change in reflectivity rather than in surface. A thin coat holds sharp edges, which makes it the right choice for fine type, small text and detailed artwork.

Raised spot UV goes on considerably thicker, sitting proud of the board with a domed, almost wet look. You can feel it under a fingertip and it catches light far more aggressively. It suits bold shapes, single words and logos — on very fine detail the extra thickness can bridge narrow gaps, so it needs artwork with room to breathe.

Why Spot UV Suits Bookmarks

• It animates as the bookmark moves. Pulled out of a book, turned over, set down — the gloss shifts each time. That movement is what catches attention.
• It costs less than foil. A premium read at a lower price point, which matters when you are printing a thousand for an event rather than a hundred for a launch.
• It keeps the palette clean. If your cover art is already busy, gloss adds a layer of interest without introducing another colour.
• It makes artwork look printed on better paper than it is. Gloss over an image against a matte border flatters the image considerably.

Who Orders Spot UV Bookmarks

• Children’s publishers. Gloss over an illustrated character is exactly the register this audience responds to.
• Comics and graphic novels. Cover art with a glossed logo reads as a miniature poster.
• Genre fiction — thriller, fantasy, romance. Categories where the cover is doing the selling, and the bookmark should match it.
• Schools and reading programmes. Bright, durable, and cheap enough to hand out by the class.
• Gaming, anime and fandom merchandise. Bookmarks sold at conventions, where a glossy finish is expected rather than optional.

Spot UV vs Plain Printed Bookmarks

A plain printed bookmark carries one surface finish across the whole piece, so every part of it reflects light identically. That uniformity is perfectly good, and for a straightforward high-volume run it is the sensible option — see our standard bookmark printing.

Spot UV introduces a second surface. Because attention follows contrast rather than brightness alone, a glossed title on a matte bookmark gets noticed even though nothing has been enlarged or brightened. On a piece as narrow as a bookmark, where there is little room for hierarchy, that is a genuinely useful tool.

Premium Finishes on the Same Bookmark

Spot UV is already selected. It stacks with:

Sizes

Standard is 2" x 7". Also available:

• 2" x 6" — the classic bookmark size
• 1.5" x 7" — slim, and effective when the gloss is a single vertical element
• 2" x 8" — taller, with space for a glossed image and text beneath it
• 2.75" x 8.5" — oversized, the best canvas for full-image gloss

Paper Stocks

Spot UV depends on contrast, so the matte areas matter as much as the glossed ones.

• Silk matte lamination — the classic pairing, where gloss reads most sharply
• Suede lamination — the deadest surface we stock, giving maximum contrast
• 22pt black suede — gloss on black is the most dramatic version of this finish
• 16pt and 32pt — both take UV; thicker simply survives a school bag better

One genuine limitation: spot UV needs a coated or laminated surface. On uncoated cotton and uncoated smooth the coating soaks in and the contrast largely disappears, so we do not recommend that pairing.

No 48pt. At roughly 1.2mm it splays a paperback spine and will not sit flat.

Hole Punching

An optional punched hole at the top takes a tassel or ribbon, off by default. Keep glossed areas clear of the punch — a coated edge around a drilled hole can chip.

Artwork Setup for Spot UV Bookmarks

• Print-ready PDF, fonts outlined, 300 DPI, CMYK
• A separate black-and-white UV mask for each treated side — solid black where gloss goes, white elsewhere
• Both sides treated means two masks, one per side
• For raised spot UV, avoid gaps narrower than about 1mm; the thicker coat bridges them
• Zip the print file and all masks together before uploading
