Description
Cold Foil Business Cards That Bring Full Color and Metallic Shine Together
Most metallic finishes force a tradeoff: you get the shine, or you get full-color detail, rarely both in the same tight space. Cold foil closes that gap. It lets vivid, full-color printing sit directly alongside a brilliant metallic foil accent on the same card, so a logo can shimmer while the photography or gradient next to it stays crisp and colorful.
At printshaQ, our cold foil business cards are built on a premium 28pt silk-laminated stock — thick, substantial, and finished with a soft matte hand-feel that makes the foil pop even harder against it. This is one of our most specialized finishes, and the card stock and process reflect that.
What Is Cold Foil?
Cold foil is a distinct process from traditional hot foil stamping. Instead of using heated dies to press foil onto the card one shape at a time, cold foil is applied through an offset-based printing pass, which allows fine detail and full-color artwork to be printed right up against — or underneath — the foil itself, all without the separate heat-and-die step that classic foil stamping requires. If you want a refresher on how the classic method works for comparison, see our guide: What Is Foil Stamping?
The practical result for your card: sharper transitions between foil and full-color ink, and the ability to run photography, gradients, or detailed line art directly beside a metallic accent — something traditional hot foil stamping handles less precisely.
Why Cold Foil Business Cards Work
- Full color plus foil, together: Vivid CMYK printing and metallic shine can sit side by side on the same card without one compromising the other.
- Fine detail: Thin lines, small type, and intricate logo elements hold up better in foil than they typically do with heat-stamped dies.
- Premium first impression: The 28pt silk-laminated stock adds real weight and a soft, high-end texture that pairs naturally with the foil's shine.
- Standout positioning: At a premium price point above our standard foil stamped business cards, this is the card for brands that want their most important piece to look unmistakably top-tier.
Foil Colors & Sizes
Every card supports up to 3 independent foil stamps — Foil 1, Foil 2, and Foil 3 — each configurable separately on the front and back, so multi-color foil logos and layered designs are fully possible on one card.
Choose from a wide foil color library:
- Metallics: Rose Gold, Silver, Gold, Copper
- Specialty Shimmer: Rainbow Silver, Rainbow Gold
- Solid Colors: Cobalt/Navy/Ocean Blue, Teal, Purple, Lavender, Carnation Pink, Black, Pink, Magenta, Red, Hot Pink, Green, Indigo, Orange
Available in four sizes:
- Standard — 3.5" x 2"
- European — 2.125" x 3.375"
- Super Slim — 3.5" x 1.5"
- Square — 2" x 2"
Rounded corners are optional in 1/4" or 1/8" radius (+1 day production).
Premium Upgrades & Combinations
Cold foil pairs well with printshaQ's other specialty finishes for an even more layered, tactile result:
- Spot UV: Add glossy contrast on the matte silk base — including raised Spot UV — on the front, back, or both sides (explore Spot UV business cards, or Raised Spot UV business cards for the thicker, dimensional version).
- Embossing or Debossing: Add a raised or pressed tactile element alongside the foil for a card you feel as much as see (see embossed business cards).
- Laser Die Cut: Cut the card into a fully custom shape or silhouette instead of a standard rectangle (browse die cut business cards).
- Colored or Foil Edges: Extend the color story to the edge of the card. Foil edges draw from the same foil color library above, and colored edges are available from an extensive PMS swatch list spanning metallics, fluorescents, and solid colors.
- PMS Ink Matching: Need your printed brand colors to match exactly? We offer PMS color matching on up to 2 ink colors, so your card holds your brand palette precisely alongside the foil.
Prefer a classic single-pass metallic look instead of the full-color-plus-foil combination? Our Foil Embossed Business Cards combine foil stamping with texture for a different kind of premium finish.
Stock & Turnaround
Cold foil business cards are printed on 28pt silk-laminated stock — noticeably thicker and softer to the touch than a standard business card, and the stock we've found holds foil and full-color detail the most cleanly together. Because of the extra printing pass and lamination involved, production runs 14–18 working days, longer than our standard finishes, so plan artwork and ordering with that in mind for any launch or event deadline.
When Should You Use Cold Foil?
- Your logo or brand mark uses more than one color and you don't want to compromise on foil coverage.
- You want a metallic accent to sit next to a full-color photo, gradient, or detailed illustration.
- You're outfitting a founder, partner, or executive with the single most premium card in the company.
- You want a card that photographs and feels distinctly more elevated than standard foil stamping.
- Your industry — real estate, luxury retail, hospitality, high-end services — depends on a first-touch impression that signals quality immediately.
Easy Customization
Upload your print-ready artwork, or email it after placing your order. For cold foil and any other specialty finish selected on this card (Spot UV, embossing, die cut, colored/foil edge), include a separate mask file showing exactly where each effect should apply — this keeps foil placement precise across all 3 available foil stamps. Our design team also offers paid design assistance on this product: $100 for a full design built from your logo, or $50 for edits to a design you already have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is cold foil the same as regular foil stamping?
No. Cold foil is a separate process from traditional hot foil stamping. It's applied via a printing pass rather than a heated die, which is what allows full-color printing to sit directly alongside the foil on the same card. See our What Is Foil Stamping? guide for how the traditional method compares.
Why does cold foil cost more than standard foil stamping?
Cold foil business cards start at $170, compared to $80 for our standard foil stamped business cards. The premium reflects the 28pt silk-laminated stock, the additional printing pass, and the longer 14–18 working day production this process requires.
How many foil colors can I use on one card?
Up to 3 separate foil stamps, each independently placed and colored, on the front and/or back.
Can I combine cold foil with Spot UV or embossing?
Yes. Spot UV (including raised Spot UV), embossing/debossing, laser die cutting, and colored or foil edges can all be added to a cold foil card.
Do you offer PMS color matching?
Yes, up to 2 PMS ink colors, so your printed brand colors stay consistent alongside the foil.
