Die Cut Printing

Die Cutting vs. Other Premium Finishes

Not sure if a custom shape is the move, or if a different finish gets you there? Here's how it stacks up against the rest of our specialty lineup:

Curious how a custom shape stacks up against foil, texture, and gloss in the same "premium print" conversation? Our post on 3D business cards covers where die cutting, foil, and raised finishes all fit together.

Standard Die Cut vs. Laser Die Cut

Not all die cutting is the same process, and the two methods are genuinely built for different jobs:

Short version: if your shape is relatively simple, standard die cutting gets you there for less. If your shape has fine detail, sharp interior points, or intricate cutouts, laser die cutting is what makes it possible at all. See Laser Die Cut Business Cards for the premium option.

Who Uses Die Cut Printing

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between die cutting and rounded corners? Rounded corners are the simplest, most common form of die cutting — just the four corners of a standard card rounded off. Full die cutting can go far beyond that, cutting the entire card or piece into a fully custom silhouette, not just softening the edges.

Can you cut any shape I want? In almost every case, yes. If you can send us a vector outline of the shape, we can typically cut it. More intricate shapes with tight inner corners may need small adjustments to cut cleanly — our team will flag that during file review, before anything goes to print.

Do I need a special file for die cutting? Yes. Along with your regular print-ready artwork, you'll need a die line — a separate vector path showing exactly where the cut will happen. If you don't have one, we can help you create it from your logo or design.

Can I combine die cutting with foil, embossing, or spot UV? Absolutely — this is one of the best ways to make a die cut piece feel even more premium. A custom-shaped card with a foil-stamped logo or an embossed detail gets you a shape and a finish working together, not competing with each other.

What products can I get die cut? Business cards, postcards, and presentation folders today, with additional products being added regularly. If you don't see your product listed, ask — die cutting can typically be applied to most paper-based print pieces.

Does die cutting cost more than a standard rectangle card? Custom die cutting requires a custom die (or a digital cutting setup for shorter runs), so yes, it typically carries an added cost over a standard rectangular card. Simple rounded corners are usually a much smaller upcharge than a fully custom silhouette.

What's the difference between standard die cutting and laser die cutting? Standard die cutting uses a physical steel rule die and is best for simpler shapes — it's fast and included at our base price. Laser die cutting uses a computer-guided laser instead, which can handle much finer detail and more intricate custom shapes than a die can physically achieve, which is why it's priced as our premium option. See Laser Die Cut Business Cards for details.
