Embossed Hang Tags

Some finishes are seen. Embossing is felt. Pressing your logo up out of the board turns a flat printed card into something with physical relief, and a customer registers it in the half-second before they have consciously looked at anything.

At printshaQ we emboss hang tags on a die and a press, the same equipment behind our embossed business cards. Embossing comes pre-selected on this page, so the price shown is for a tag with texture in it, not a plain one waiting on an upgrade.

What Are Embossed Hang Tags?

An embossed hang tag is a product tag with part of the design pushed upward from the surface using a metal die. The board is shaped, not coated — nothing is added, so the effect survives handling, humidity and a shipping carton without scuffing.

If you learned the trade elsewhere, you may know these as swing tags or swing tickets, or simply as garment tags, apparel tags or product tags. The technique is sometimes called blind embossing when no ink or foil goes near the raised area — just the shape of the board doing the work. That is the version most luxury brands actually buy.

Why Embossed Hang Tags Work

  • Touch outlasts sight. People forget what a tag looked like and remember that it felt like something. Texture is the slowest-fading impression you can print.
  • It reads as restraint. Where foil announces itself, an emboss whispers. For brands built on understatement, that difference matters.
  • It works without color. A blind emboss on cream uncoated stock needs no ink at all, which suits minimal identities that would look wrong in metallic.
  • It cannot be faked digitally. There is no filter or print setting that produces genuine relief, which is precisely why it signals what it signals.

Embossing vs Debossing

Both use a die and pressure; the direction differs.

Embossing pushes the design up from the surface. The raised area catches light along its edges and casts a faint shadow, so the mark appears to lift off the board. Use it when the logo should be the thing your hand finds first.

Debossing presses the design down into the board instead. The impression is quieter and sits flush with the stack, which makes it the better choice for a tag that will be handled in bulk or shipped tightly packed. On very thick stocks a deep deboss can look almost stamped into leather.

Both cost the same here, and you choose between them in the dropdown above. If you want one element raised and another recessed on the same tag, note it in the special instructions and we will confirm what the artwork needs.

Who Uses Embossed Hang Tags

  • Stationery and paper goods. An embossed maker’s mark on the tag speaks the same language as the product inside it.
  • Weddings and events. Favour tags, place cards and gift tags where a metallic finish would fight the styling.
  • Leather goods and accessories. Relief on board sits naturally beside relief stamped into leather.
  • Artisan food and preserves. A blind embossed monogram on uncoated kraft reads handmade in a way that gloss never will.
  • Heritage and traditional brands. Embossing is the oldest premium finish in print, and it carries that history with it.

Embossed vs Plain Printed Hang Tags

A plain printed tag is flat by definition — ink sits level with the board, so the whole surface reflects light identically. It is efficient, inexpensive and perfectly suited to volume. Our standard hang tag printing covers exactly that.

An embossed tag changes the geometry of the surface rather than its color. That means it still works in a dim shop, still works in a black-and-white photograph, and still works when the tag has been in a pocket. A printed tag delivers information; an embossed tag delivers information plus evidence that somebody cared about the tag.

Premium Upgrades on the Same Tag

Embossing is already selected. It combines well with:

  • Foil stamping — foil applied into the embossed area gives raised metal, the most expensive-looking combination we offer. See foil stamped hang tags.
  • Spot UV — gloss on the flat areas throws the matte relief into sharper contrast. See spot UV hang tags.
  • Die cutting — texture and silhouette together. See die cut hang tags.
  • PMS matching — exact brand color on the printed areas surrounding the emboss.

Stocks That Hold an Emboss

Relief depends almost entirely on the board. Thin stock flattens under pressure and the impression fades; thick stock holds its shape indefinitely.

  • 32pt and 48pt — where embossing genuinely comes into its own, with depth you can feel through a glove
  • 16pt — workable for finer marks, though the effect is subtler
  • Uncoated cotton and uncoated smooth — the softest surfaces we stock and the most sympathetic to a blind emboss
  • 22pt black suede — deep relief on a dark, matte, tactile board

Silk matte lamination and suede lamination both emboss cleanly too. Uncoated stocks also take a pen, which matters if you price or sign tags by hand.

Sizes, Hole Punching and String

The standard size is 2" x 3.5". Also available: 1.5" x 3.5", 1.75" x 3.5", 2" x 2", 2.5" x 2.5", 2" x 4", 2" x 6" and 3" x 3". Anything outside that list, contact us for a quote.

Holes are punched top center as standard, with top left and top right available, in 4mm, 5mm or 6mm. Leave clearance between the punch and any embossed element — relief too close to a hole distorts the edge of the board.

String can be supplied with your order if you would rather not source it separately.

Artwork Setup for Embossed Hang Tags

  • Print-ready PDF, fonts outlined, 300 DPI, CMYK
  • A separate black-and-white emboss mask — 100% black marks what should be raised, white marks what stays flat
  • Bold shapes emboss best. Strokes under about 1pt tend to disappear as the board flexes back
  • Keep embossed elements clear of the trim edge and the punch
  • Zip the print file with every mask before uploading

Only have a logo? Pick the design option at checkout and we will build the tag around it.

A tag someone runs a thumb across on the way to the till has already done more work than one they simply glanced at. Embossing is how you earn that second of attention.
